Biography

France — French song, Pop

Director, (master) singer, ladykiller, producer, basketball player, ‘freestyler’ (in his off hours), author, composer: all of these ‘Créatures’ are in fact just one man, the elusive Philippe Katerine, a multitalented artist who learned to ‘Sink or Swim’ when he dived onto the scene during the early 1990s. Since then, he has become one of the truly great proponents of this art form dismissed by many, cutting or cranking up the volume to suit his whims and mood – deadpan style. Named ‘best male artist’ at the 2020 Victoires de la Musique awards, this healthily eccentric 50-something’s latest album – aptly titled ‘Confessions’ (2019) – is an improbable melting-pop of syncopated songs filtered through the prism of rap, trap, rock and electro. So there’s no need to affect an innocent air before launching in to become ‘members’ of his audience – embrace it!
