Pairing futility with fatalism, Vald does not mince the words he binds to his beats, whether for mix tapes (the first was released in 2012) or official albums (which number four in 2021). Humour veering towards the dark side depicts the absurdity of a world that is ‘cruel’ but with which we have no choice but to join forces – on the face of it, there seem to be few alternatives. To set out his store (and perhaps to cloud the issue?), he cites two of his influences as being Raymond Devos (‘the unique way he had of derailing stories’) and AlKpote, draws on horror and porn films, and speaks without embarrassment about money, politics, sex and vice-versa. This rapper beyond reproach serves as a roving reporter for a society that he never judges, just presents with the frills stripped away.
